sphere and geosphere

there are two ball shaped objects you can create. The first is a sphere, the second is a geosphere. The difference between them is in how the mesh is formed.

A sphere has geometry that resembles lattitude and logitude lines of a globe. that is there are two poles (a single vertex at either ends) with edges drawn between them around the sphere at various angles. are then a number of horizontal lines that wrap around the sphere.

A geosphere is formed by inter connected triangles (think about the pattern on the cinesphere at Ontario place).
